I Built a Chrome Extension That Adds Picture-in-Picture to Netflix

If you've ever tried to pop Netflix into a floating window while you work -- or just wanted to keep watching while switching tabs -- you've probably noticed that Netflix has no option to do so when on a PC or Mac. Most streaming services let you right-click a video and hit "Picture in Picture." Netflix removes that option entirely. So I built a Chrome extension for just this purpose!

Introducing Netflix PiP

Netflix PiP is a free Chrome extension that adds the Picture-in-Picture feature on Netflix. Once installed, you can float your show or movie in a small window that stays on top of everything else -- even when you switch apps or tabs.

How to Install It

(Chrome Web Store link coming soon!)

I'm in the process of getting this listed on the Chrome Web Store. In the meantime, you can install it manually in just a few steps -- it's easier than it sounds, I promise.

1. 📥 Download the extension

2. 📂 Unzip it
Extract the folder somewhere permanent on your computer -- Desktop or Documents works great. Just don't delete it later or the extension will stop working.

3. 🌐 Open Chrome Extensions
Type this into your Chrome address bar and hit Enter: chrome://extensions
Extract the folder somewhere permanent on your computer -- Desktop or Documents works -great. Just don't delete it later or the extension will stop working.

4. 🔧 Enable Developer Mode
In the top-right corner of that page, toggle on Developer mode. This is just a setting that lets you install extensions from your own computer — it's safe. Not sure where to find it? Google has a quick guide here.

5. ✅ Load the extension
Click Load unpacked, then select the netflix-pip folder you extracted in Step 2.
That's it -- the extension is installed! 🎉

How to Use It

Once installed, you have three ways to trigger Picture-in-Picture on Netflix:
Right-click anywhere on the Netflix page and choose "Picture in Picture"
Press Shift+P while watching
Click the Netflix PiP icon in your Chrome toolbar

The video will pop into a floating window you can drag anywhere on your screen. It stays on top even when you switch to other apps.

🛒 Chrome Web Store -- Coming Soon

I'm submitting this to the Chrome Web Store shortly. Once it's approved, installation will be one click and you won't need Developer Mode at all. I'll update this post with the link when it goes live.
