A great way to help combat AI plagiarism is to verify sources by looking up the DOI or ISBN to see if they're real. So I vibe coded an app that helps me verify sources.

Introducing Trace: DOI and ISBN Lookup Tool

Trace checks whether a source is real. Paste in a DOI or ISBN and it queries live bibliographic databases and pulls back the actual metadata on record: title, authors, year, journal or publisher. If the source exists, you'll see it. If it doesn't, you'll know that too. I also find it useful in my own research when I'm using AI as a research assistant, to ensure that the sources AI provides me are not hallucinations.

In addition to all of that, Trace also generates formatted citations on the spot in APA 7th Edition, MLA 9th Edition, and Chicago Notes-Bibliography, including in-text and footnote formats. Please be aware that an internet connection is required to query the databases.

Note: Always double-check your citations. Trace pulls real metadata from live databases, but no tool is a substitute for reviewing the official formatting guides yourself. APA, MLA, and Chicago each publish their own style guides and have free resources online, and it's always worth a quick check if using this tool for citation generation.
